Soccer is known worldwide for its passionate fans, and every soccer-mad country has its hooligans who get sloppy and start brawls. But in Russia, these hooligans are trained, organized, and brutally violent.

These organized gangs of hooligans, referred to as “firms,” are becoming more prominent around the country. At the European Soccer Championship last summer, violent clashes in Marseilles showcased the professional fighting prowess of Russian hooligans.

Russia hosting the World Cup in 2018 has put pressure on law enforcement to crack down on the “firms,” who put close to 30 England supporters in the hospital after the 2016 Euro Cup.

VICE News correspondent Ben Makuch reports from Russia ,where he meets with some career hooligans. Despite having the support of some people in the government, the gangs anticipate significant disruption to their activities in the coming months.

  1. English Football Hooligans peaked in the 1970s and 1980s but had more or less fizzled out by the early 1990s apart from a very small group of losers who try to keep the culture alive today.

Russian football hooligan culture is huge right now, like how it was in England in the 1980s.

There are no true hooligan firms left in England anymore apart from
Very small insignificant groups. Who Russian Hooligans fought in this were not English Hooligans, just drunk English football fans…

  2. Russians need to remember!!! All our top boys are banged up or are banned from international games!! They have to hand there passports in or face jail!!! We all know the original hooligans who started it are ENGLISH!! We also invented football and everything that comes with it!!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

  3. They're just having fun. There are a lot of fights in fields near pretty much any city in Russia. They kick each others asses and then just go away until the next fight starts. It's like the english hooligans who died out in the 90s (which is pretty sad because it was a great subculture)…

  4. I am moving to Russia! They still got snow. And it'd be nice to have a fist fight NOT end in bullets. I love my city but I ain't got no friends left. I imagine walking away from a fight like dat clapping. A man uses what God gave him. Not the tools of the devil,as we do here. I'm ashamed to say I can't go nowhere within my snubby. It aint a manly feeling like some try to make it out to be. Being a man has nothing to do with how big caliber you have. The observation of Russian lifestyle is appealing because you don't have to bury someone every fucking time theres a fight. I am a bit older,a fucking relic in this sport, but it'd be nice to feel the freshness of a fist to the face without having to go nuclear right after. If you don't get it then you don't get it.

  5. According to Russians, and other idiot countries, the elderly, kids, and regular fans are "English hooligans". Pathetic. Next time, at least organise a meet with us. And don't forget your Stone Island.
